COLUMBUS COMETS DOWN PASSION, 27-13 |
|
The Passion traveled to Columbus on June 10 for a game with critical
playoff implications, and dropped a hard-fought 27-13 decision to the
Comets.
Other than a 20-yard scamper for a touchdown by quarterback Lisa Horton in
the second quarter, the Passion were unable to generate a ground game and
finished with only 72 yards rushing and 3 rushing first downs on the
night. The Comets, meanwhile, rolled up 187 yards on 52 carries, with
tailback Shelley Gates carrying 43 times for 170 of those yards.
With the running game sputtering, the Passion had to turn to the air, but
was able to complete only 6 passes for 89 yards and no scores. Lyndsi
Hughes, Wilma Walton and Sherry Kring pulled in all of the receptions,
with Walton getting 54 yards on 2 catches.
The defense once again stood tall for the Passion despite giving up 27
points. Linebacker Ava Nickens caught a fumble in the air and rumbled 48
yards for a touchdown, her second in as many games. Nickens also
contributed 9 tackles, 2 for losses. Linebacker Beth Amato had a monster
game with 17 tackles, a Passion season high, including 2 for losses.
Kellie Byers had 11 tackles and her second interception of the season, and
Melissa Yeck made 14 stops with 2 for losses. Nose guard JoJo Warner was a
force in the middle as she has been all season, making 10 stops with 3 for
losses. Even though the Comets ran 52 times, the Passion defense stopped
the running backs 22 times for zero or negative yards, an excellent effort
considering the amount of time they spent on the field. Finally,
cornerback Kelly Stoner picked off her third pass of the season, giving
the Passion secondary 12 for the year.
The Passion must now prepare for their final regular season game at home
this Saturday against the Cincinnati Sizzle. This is a must-win game if
the Passion has any hopes of reaching the playoffs, and they will need
help from other teams on the final weekend to do so. |
