The Pittsburgh Passion professional women's football team was formed in March 2002. The team is owned by Passion player, Teresa Conn.

The Passion competes in the National Women's Football Association (NWFA), (www.womensfootballassociation.com) headquartered in Nashville, TN. The Passion is a member of the Northern Conference and plays an 8 game regular season schedule. A bye week is built into the schedule which runs from April through mid-June each year. The season concludes with playoffs and a championship game during June and July. The teams play according to standard NFL rules, with the following notable exceptions; TDY size football, only one foot in bounds required following a reception and no blocking below the waist down field.

In spring 2003, the Passion played its home games at Belle Vernon Area High School. Head Coach was Larry Camerota. The team finished its inaugural campaign with a 2-6 record, displaying a highly competitive brand of football with 4 of the 6 losses by a touchdown or less margin. Average attendance at each of the Passion's 4 home games was 2500-3000 fans. For 2004, the Passion moved its home field to Ambridge High School's Moe Rubenstein Stadium. Lou Rood served as Head Coach. The team improved its regular season record to 6-2, narrowly missing a berth in the NWFA playoffs as a Northern Conference wild card team. The Passion led the league in attendance for 2004 with crowds approaching 4000 per game.
The Passion also played the 2005 season at Moe Rubenstein Stadium. Ed Jenkins was the head coach, leading the team to a 5-3 record, again narrowly missing a playoff berth.
In 2006, the Passion moved south to a new home field at George Cupples (South) Stadium in Pittsburgh. Bob Gold took over as head coach. Once again, the Passion finished with a 5-3 league record and no post season appearance.
During those formative years of the organization, radio, television and newspaper coverage of the organization has steadily increased throughout the Pittsburgh area. The team members and staff are very active year round attending community events, working with local youth groups and building relationships with corporate sponsors to further promote the game of women's football.

During the fall and winter, the team holds off-season conditioning workouts and pre-season training camp sessions. The team has utilized indoor strength training facilities and practice fields at various sports complexes throughout the Pittsburgh area. The team heads outdoors again to Cupples Stadium in early spring when the weather improves.

For 2007, the Passion head coach is Ron Coder, a former NFL player. The Passion will carry an active roster of 55 women along with a practice squad. Each year, players are selected for the team after going through a tryout and interview process to test physical abilities and gauge interest in playing. Since the organization's inception in 2002, close to 300 women have attended Passion tryouts.

With little to no actual experience playing football, the players come to the team from various other sports backgrounds including softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, rugby and lacrosse. The players live in downtown Pittsburgh as well as the various suburbs of Pittsburgh and typically commute 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for meetings, strength and conditioning workouts and practice 3-4 times per week in the evenings and on weekends.

The average age of the NWFA players and the Pittsburgh Passion team members is mid 30's. A wide range of occupations and outside interests are represented. The players are single, married and/or parents. However, natural athleticism and previous sports playing experience is the common tie.

The 2007 Pittsburgh Passion coaching staff includes a group of assistants with various coaching backgrounds and playing experience at the youth, scholastic, collegiate and professional levels. Volunteer support personnel include equipment and merchandising managers, athletic trainers, personal trainers, chiropractors, web designers, marketers, videographers, photographers, statisticians, and game day coordinators. The Passion have also implemented an active internship program with local colleges and universities to give students hands-on experience throughout the year in fields such as advertising, marketing, public relations, journalism, business administration and sports management.
